Supported Filetypes

The New Spark Platform transcoder accepts just about anything you can throw at it. We strive to support all consumer devices and myriad configurations, and our file conversion success rate is over 99%.

Below is a list of media types supported by the platform.

Media formats / containers

This list of file formats are common wrappers/containers for video and audio streams. In some cases a wrapper indicates also which codecs are embedded (mp3 for example), but a file has an .mov wrapper does not necessarily mean we also support its audio or video codecs.

Recommended source file formats

Video Format

We currently have the best support for MPEG-4 H.264/AVC format. We recommend using this format to upload video files. Often these files have .mov or .mp4 extensions. If you intend to use passthrough, make sure the file has .mp4 extension by following the Video Encoding Guidelines.

Audio

We re-encode every uploaded audio file to MP3. If you'd like to keep the highest possible quality we recommend uploading in MP3, as these files just pass-through (meaning, we won't reconvert them.)

Some transcoder components, such as the video mixer will resample every incoming audio track (and audio file or an audio stream in a video) to 44100Hz. We recommend using this sampling rate as resampling audiotracks could result in quality degradation.

Files with a mono audio stream will be converted to joint-stereo for most output formats. Multi-channel audio (5.1, DTS, etc...) will be down-mixed to stereo.
